NFL announces 2014 officials

Published

on

This post has been updated to reflect changes in the 2014 officiating staff after the initial announcement.

The NFL has announced its 2014 roster of officials (full list below after the jump).  The roster features 12 new hires.  Earlier we reported that 11 officials were not going to return to the field for 2014. Field judge Mike Weir is not listed as returning this season, in addition to 11 other departures we previously noted, according to the roster released by the league.

Previously we were able to confirm six of the new hires.

The new hires are, with uniform number, position and college conference:

  • Brad Allen, #122, referee, ACC
  • Brad Freeman, #88, field judge, SEC
  • Eugene Hall, #103, field judge, Big 12
  • Shawn Hochuli, #83, side judge, Pac-12
  • John Jenkins, #117, field judge, Pac-12
  • Alex Kemp, #55, side judge, Big Ten
  • Rich Martinez, #39, back judge, SEC
  • Bryan Neale, #92, umpire, Big Ten
  • Scott Novak, #1, side judge, Big 12
  • Steve Patrick, #17, back judge, SEC
  • Patrick Turner, #13, head linesman, Pac-12
  • Ed Walker, #123, line judge, Pac-12
  • Mark Pellis, #131, umpire, American Athletic

This is the first time since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger that numbers 1 and 13 have been issued.  Congratulations to all the new hires!

In addition to the new hires, 21 officials from the college ranks will take part in the second NFL advanced training program this preseason.

As we reported earlier, Ronald Torbert and Craig Wrolstad are new referees, replacing the retired Scott Green and Ronald Winter.  Adrian Hill moves to field judge from line judge for 2014.  Jim Howey moves to field judge from head linesman and Julian Mapp moves to head linesman from line judge.

There is an interesting position assignment for new hire Brad Allen.  He has referee experience in college and worked deep in the secondary last preseason in the NFL’s advanced training program, yet for 2014, the NFL hired him as an umpire.  We have a story on that coming soon.

The NFL has not released the crew assignments for 2014.
