Referee and officiating assignments, preseason week 2

Published

on

This week, the NFL will have eight officials on the field for all games. The eighth position is the middle judge, which will be evaluated for potential implementation in 2017 or a future season.

In addition, some college officials that are on the league’s development squad are getting some practical game experience this week. In some cases they will officiate a full game, and in others it will be a half game, as has been the practice in previous seasons. There are 29 officials in the training program, but only 11 will be on the field this week. Also, there are three officials from the Canadian Football League, who are getting some NFL reps as part of an interleague training arrangement.

The NFL also has used the second preseason weekend to give veteran officials a tryout at the referee position. It seems that the officiating department is putting that on hold to fully evaluate the MJ position.

The MJ position is shown below with the jersey number of the official. Officials in the development program are listed in italics and, for those who have been in the program before, their jersey number. CFL officials are shown with a maple leaf, 🍁.

All times listed below are Eastern. Live games on NFL Network will be telecast on local stations only in both teams’ markets. Jerome Boger’s crew is off, with some of those officials assigned to the MJ position.
