A new wave of officials has just received the call that they have been waiting for during their entire careers. The NFL has hired 10 on-field officials and 5 replay assistants for the 2022 season. Additionally, 4 current replay assistants have been promoted to replay official.
All of the on-field officials have at least one year of experience in the Officiating Development Program.
Among the 10 new on-field officials, 8 are currently officiating in the USFL. Additionally, 5 of those 8 USFL officials also worked in the Alliance of American Football in 2019 and the XFL in 2020.
Umpire Mike Morton joins the list of former NFL players who have traded in their shoulder pads for stripes. Morton was a linebacker for 7 seasons in the NFL, playing for the Raiders, Rams, Packers, and Colts during his career. He is the first NFL official to have a Super Bowl ring as a player, as he won Super Bowl XXXIV with the Rams in the 1999 season.
Back judge Tra Boger is the son of current referee Jerome Boger. Line judge Robin DeLorenzo is the third female permanent on-field official to be hired by the NFL, joining down judge Sarah Thomas and line judge Maia Chaka. Side judge Lo Van Pham is the NFL’s first Asian-American official; he was born in Laos and moved to the United States at the age of 7.
