Super Bowl LVIII

An officiating first for a Super Bowl rematch

Bill Vinovich will definitely be experiencing déjà vu

Referee Bill Vinovich might hear his alarm clock on Super Bowl morning playing “I’ve Got You Babe” by Sonny and Cher, just like in the movie Groundhog Day. He will definitely be experiencing déjà vu as he officiates his third Super Bowl in 10 years.

Vinovich last worked the Super Bowl at the end of the 2019 season in Miami — Super Bowl LIV between the Chiefs and the 49ers. It is the first time that a referee presided over two Super Bowls with the same two teams.

Referees assigned to Super Bowl rematches

Dolphins-Washington Tommy Bell (VII) Jerry Markbreit (XVII)
Cowboys-Steelers Norm Schachter (X) Pat Haggerty (XIII) Red Cashion (XXX)
Bengals-49ers Pat Haggerty (XVI) Jerry Seeman (XXIII)
Bills-Cowboys Dick Hantak (XXVII) Bob McElwee (XXVIII)
Patriots-STL/LA Rams Bernie Kukar (XXXVI) John Parry (LIII)
Eagles-Patriots Terry McAulay (XXXIX) Gene Steratore (LII)
Giants-Patriots Mike Carey (XLII) John Parry (XLVI)
Chiefs-49ers Bill Vinovich (LIV) Bill Vinovich (LVIII)

The only other official to have accomplished this feat was line judge Jack Fette. Of his record five Super Bowls, two of them were the Steelers and Cowboys.

Vinovich also was the referee for Super Bowl XLIX when the Patriots defeated the Seahawks. His crew was announced Tuesday after the Divisional Playoffs.
