1st & 25 Podcast
Episode 13: When the clock hits 0:00
We have a conversation about postgame procedures and officiating safety at the local level
We have one topic this week on the 1st & 25 podcast. What should officials do when the clock hits zero?
Most state and regional governing bodies of high school officials want the crew to leave the field immediately. When we discussed this internally, our own Cam Filipe said his experience was a little different. We conducted an informal survey on our social media to hear what rules govern officials in other states and their experiences.
We originally thought that the rule that officials should observe the handshake line might be a little more widespread, but our poll of officials found it was not. (Sorry, Massachusetts, we aren’t piling on.)
This continued into a conversation of officiating safety and that best practices may include having a pregame meeting with security, coaches, athletic trainers, gamesite management and the officiating crew. We hope this helps spur some conversations at the local and state level to continually re-evaluate the safety of the crew and having good postgame procedures in place. We urge you to share this podcast with others to start the dialogue.
Ben Austro, Mark Schultz, Cam Filipe, Pat Weber, and Chris Seubert have this week’s discussion. You can also find the 1st & 25 podcast on your favorite podcasting app.
