Down judge Sarah Thomas was the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl. She was also the first woman to become a permanent NFL official and the first woman to officiate an NFL postseason game.
For the first time since Super Bowl I, a full crew of alternates was assigned to Super Bowl LV. This was a contingency plan as a response to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic. Alternate officials took the place of some assigned on-field officials earlier in the 2020 postseason due to covid-19 protocol-related reasons.
