Referee Jim Tunney became the first official to be assigned to consecutive Super Bowls. He and field judge Tom Sifferman (Super Bowls XXXVII, XXXVIII, and XXXIX) are the only two officials who worked consecutive Super Bowls.

Super Bowl XII was the last NFL game to feature a six-man officiating crew. The side judge (SJ) position was introduced in the 1978 season, and was the most recent position added to an NFL officiating crew.
