The officiating crew for Super Bowl XXXIV holds the record for most Super Bowl experience entering the game, with 14 combined Super Bowl on-field assignments for the crew. Super Bowl XXXIV was referee Bob McElwee’s third Super Bowl, umpire Ron Botchan’s fifth, head linesman Earnie Frantz’s third, field judge Al Jury’s fifth, and side judge Tom Fincken’s third.
Ron Botchan and Al Jury became the fourth and fifth NFL officials, and most recent, to officiate five Super Bowls.
Bob McElwee and Al Jury are the only two NFL officials to work at least one Super Bowl in three different decades.
Back judge Bill Leavy was promoted to referee prior to the 2001 season, and was the referee for Super Bowl XL following the 2005 season. He became the fourth official to work a Super Bowl at the referee position after working a different Super Bowl at his original position prior to being promoted.
