For the 2001 season, replacement officials worked NFL games during the final week of the preseason and the first week of the regular season.
An American flag patch was added to all NFL officials’ uniforms for Week 2 of the 2001 season, in remembrance of the lives lost during the September 11 attacks. The patches remained on the jerseys until the 2006 season, when the design of the jerseys changed to its new sleeker look that is used today.
Back judge Scott Green was promoted to referee prior to the 2005 season, and was the referee for Super Bowl XLIV following the 2009 season. He became the sixth official to work a Super Bowl at the referee position after working a different Super Bowl at his original position prior to being promoted.
